 ABSTRACT

Efficient security and defence are critical for the preservation of values important to the citizens, such as freedom, sovereignty, territorial integrity, democratic order, protection of life, health and basic rights and freedoms, ability to fulfil the country’s obligations arising out of international treaties and agreements, as well as the capability to resolve critical situations and to face threats of violence and aggression. The Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic are created for the purpose of preserving peace and security, providing the defence of the state and fulfilling the country´s obligations arising out of international treaties. The present study addresses the issue of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic deployment in NATO operations after the Warsaw Summit. In addition to operations and missions, NATO and its allies and partners are involved in many other activities such as defence and political reforms, military planning and exercise, scientific cooperation and research, information sharing or humanitarian aid. The results show that the humanitarian and ethical aspects of resolving international disputes and crises are of increasing importance. They have a growing influence on political decisions whether to use the armed forces and on the limiting needs for their deployment. The Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic must develop its cooperation with NATO countries in future, participate in the operations/missions and support the peace and security on the international scene.
